Questions worth asking before you sign a waterproofing contract

October 21, 2026 · 5 min read

A good contractor will answer these without hesitating, and the answers will help you compare more than one estimate.

  1. Where is the water coming in?
  2. What does the plan cover, and what does it leave out?
  3. How will you test the system?
  4. What does the warranty say?
  5. What happens to my basement while you work?
  6. Is there a cheaper fix outside?

Where is the water coming in?

Ask them to show you the spot, not just describe it. The plan should follow from what they found.

What does the plan cover, and what does it leave out?

Find out whether it is one wall or all of them, and whether the pump, the discharge line and the cleanup are included.

Water in your basement right now?

Call any time. Tell us where it shows up and we will set up the free inspection.

How will you test the system?

Water should be run through the drain and the pump before the job is called finished. Ask to see it.

What does the warranty say?

Ask for it in writing. Look at what it covers, how long it lasts, and whether it transfers if you sell the house.

What happens to my basement while you work?

Ask how floors and stairs are protected, how dust is handled and how long the work area will be closed off.

Is there a cheaper fix outside?

Sometimes extending a downspout or improving the grade is enough. A good contractor tells you so even if it means a smaller job.
